Regional Gas Company issued technical specifications for connecting the biomethane plant and ordered gas equipment to that end at one of the RGC Production plants. The capacity of the first stage of the project, which will be completed by the end of this year, will be 330 cubic meters of biomethane per hour.
Chernihivgas JSC, operating under the RGC brand, issued technical specifications for connecting the first biomethane plant in Ukraine, which belongs to Gals Agro LLC. RGC developed several options for connecting the biomethane plant; the document presented to the partners contained three connection options in terms of cost and turnaround time. The client chose the optimum alternative.
The first stage of the project involves the construction of an 800-meter-long gas pipeline. It would allow Gals Agro LLC to transport to gas distribution networks 330 cubic meters of biomethane per hour in winter. It is assumed that the connection would take place by the end of 2022 and the producer would be able to start biomethane production already this winter.
"This is the first project to connect a biomethane plant in Ukraine. We are ready to scale up this experience in all regions of RGC presence. Our company possesses the technical expertise and has access to the technologies of the major gas equipment manufacturers, as well as the experience of the European DSOs who have been working with biomethane for many years,” said Ihor Gotsyk, Head, Decarbonization Department, RGC. - We guarantee fast delivery of the project, safety and stability of gas supply."
In the future, Gals Agro LLC plans to increase biomethane production to 1,100 cubic meters per hour. To this end, specialists of RGC and Chernihivgas JSC will interconnect the areas of operations of two adjacent gas distribution stations, building another 8 km of gas pipeline. After that, the biomethane plant will get access to a larger number of consumers and will transport biomethane to the network using two gas distribution stations at once. The completion of the works is scheduled before the beginning of the 2023/24 heating season.
The design capacity of the installed equipment for biogas purification to biomethane is about 3 million cubic meters per year. This amount would ensure heating and cooking for 1,500 private households. In other words, communities next to the plant will have an independent source of energy at the local level.
Gas regulating equipment and the gas metering unit necessary to connect to the network, are already being manufactured at one of the advanced RGC Production plants. They will use assemblies and components by the major manufacturers, i.e. Pietro Fiorentini and Emerson, which have already proven the quality of their equipment working with biomethane in Europe and around the world.
As a reminder, gas distribution networks are the most appropriate and promising for connecting biomethane plants. These are the most extensive networks in Ukraine that have a system operating pressure comparable to that of biomethane producers, which does not require the installation of additional equipment.
Biomethane has the potential of becoming the third full-fledged source of gas in Ukraine, after domestic production and import. DSOs operating under the RGC brand have simplified to maximum the connection of biomethane plants to gas distribution networks and offer this service for 1 hryvnia. Biomethane producers shall only finance the construction of external and internal gas networks and the purchase of equipment.
